GEAR REVIEW - Pointman Gear Pouches

I saw a load of these pouches for sale on eBay from ‘pointman9665’, made by POINTMANGEAR.COM. They usually have a few different ones for sale in either British desert or temperate camo, most commonly, double frag, two sizes of utility, assorted grenade pouches and hydration carriers as well as MOLLE vests. Having looked at their website, this is about the entirety of their range. All the items on ebay are all listed as brand new factory seconds, due to slightly untidy stitching, although I can’t find anything wrong with the ones I received.

The two utility pouches are as good as any I’ve seen. Good, useful sizes with the smaller of the two being ideal as a backup mag pouch (although might rattle a bit as there is no elastic retention) easily holding three magazines, possibly four with a squeeze. The larger of the two will hold 5 (possibly 6) mags, canteen and mug plus extras, or something else along those lines. Both are of solid construction, strong straps and poppers on the bag for MOLLE attachment, and both Velcro (with integral optional Velcro blanking flap to reduce noise) and quick release buckle to keep them shut. £5.99 for the large one and £4.99 for the small one (plus shipping, which is combined if buying multiple items) ain’t a bad price either. These retail on their website for £11.99 and £10.99 respectively, again plus shipping.

The Frag pouch is where my only criticism starts. The MOLLE attachment on the double frag pouch is only about two inches wide, which doesn’t allow you to bridge two rows of PALS webbing without squashing it together. I couldn’t get it to fit onto a MOLLE vest and so had to stick it onto my TAG patrol belt, which has both single and double width PALS. The poppers are bloody hard to do up too as the double over at the back, making a sturdy fastening, but also means that it sits under the PALS webbing. This is okay with the larger pouches, where you have more room to manoeuvre, but not with the frag pouch, which would have benefitted from a more conventional fastening. For £4.99 (£10.99 from the website) though, it’s worth the punt, and they do sit nicely as part of my first line.

The other thing worth mentioning here is that because they are seconds, they come directly from the factory, which is in Singapore. It still only takes about five days, but is longer than expected (especially when you don’t read the delivery info like me) and they do mention that you should allow 7-10 days for delivery.

Official retailer Bumpf...

100% FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW ISSUE OSPREY BODY ARMOR SYSTEM

PLEASE NOTE: These pouches are a factory seconds that’s why we are selling them cheap. The pouches are in 100% fully working order and the only thing wrong with then is the stitching is not neat and tidy, that’s why we can’t sell them at the full price. These pouches are a bargain and are excellent for personnel that are just getting into Airsoft or Paintballing and would like to keep the budget low.

Fabric & Construction

This pouch is made of waterproof DPM Invista 1000Denier nylon Cordura, the same fabric used in the British army PLCE equipment. This pouch has double layered construction for maximum durability. All stress points are bartacked in place which ensures strength and durability. The pouch edges are held together and finished off using 1 inch edge binding tape. The pouches are stitched using Mil-spec nylon bonded thread ensuring tight, strong, hardwearing seems.

Uses & Configurations

The pouches can be used in many applications and attached to any kind of molle style platform including osprey body armour system, vests, patrol packs, thigh/leg platforms, chest rigs etc… this gear has lots of potential whist on ops. Once you buy the pouches you can swap and change onto any platform into whatever configuration you desire.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: As these pouches are factory seconds they will be sent direct from our factory. Please allow 7-10 days for delivery, please be patient during this period it will arrive. In the unlikely event it doesn’t arrive within this time period please contact me and I will investigate.

GEAR REVIEW - K J Eriksson Mora clipper knife

I’ve been meaning to buy a decent bushcraft/camping/general purpose outdoor knife for sometime but have, for various reasons, only just got round to it. I don’t need a massive Rambo style survival knife, just something that I can use for a bit of cooking, whittling, and in a pinch, any emergency cutting scenario that, god forbid, may arise on the odd occasion that I veer awar from central heating and readymeals. In the end, I went for a Swedish Mora knife. There are various types of these available under a variety of similar names and all fall around the £10-13 mark, which isn’t bad when you actually get the knife and weigh it up.

Much more than just a glorified kitchen knife (which is very much how it appears in pictures), it is very much more. It has a weighty blade and a nice, hefty, ergonomic grip made from what feels like very durable, grippy rubber. It feels very reassuring in your hand, like it’s not going to break on you at the first attempt to cut anything particularly sturdy, the blade is four inches long and etched with the manufacturers name of KJ Erickson of Sweden. It is surprisingly thick, razor sharp and should hold the edge nicely for a while before needing to be sharpened. The knife, overall is about nine inches long.

The sheath is a nice heavyweight plastic with a positive hold on the knife when it’s inserted. There is a chunky belt clip on the back that should accommodate most belts, although some sort of loop to stop it coming off in extreme circumstances is missing and would be a worthy addition.

I paid £4.99 plus £2.50 postage and packing for this knife from ebay. I dare say if you lurked there for a while, you could get one a bit cheaper, but a knife this versatile and useful is well worth seven and a half quid of anyone’s money.

The Art of the Tactical Carbine

This is the trailer for a three DVD set called 'The Art of the Tactical Carbine' produced by Magpul (the guys behind (surprise, surprise) magpuls and fancy M4 stocks, amongst other things). I've just watched it and I've got wood!

Next Project

I recently joined the Gearsoc.com forum, which incidentally, is a great forum, much friendlier, if not as frequently updated as Wannabe and is based in Sweden. If you're a regular on the UK gear and airsoft boards, there's a few screen-names that you'll recognise there.

All that aside, I saw on this forum that one of their members had modified a PLCE yoke as the load-bearing element for a custom Swedish chest rig. I thought that this was a great idea, and could see no reason why this should not work with other modular chest rigs such as the Tactical Tailor MAV or, in my case, the SOTech Tomcat.

First problem I ran into was sourcing the buckles. The Hellcat has female side-release buckles sewn to the chest rig, with the adjustable male section attached to the shoulder straps. Without wishing to take anything away from the modularity of the rig, and not wanting to ruin it in the event that my experiment with the yoke fails, I don't want to unstitch the buckles so I needed to find some more exactly the same. Fortunately, the buckles have 'Lock Monster' embossed on the back, so I started my Google search with that. Google did not fail me, and I found a couple of distributers that handled 50mm Lock Monster buckles. After sending several emails out (including one to SOTech thamselves), I have so far got two back:

Response 2

Please tell me if the female protion is adjustable or not?
Also give me your address and I will mail them to you.

How about that ? Ann Natmo has surprised the hell out of me by offering to ship me some buckles without even asking for payment. Is this too good to be true ? We'll have to wait and see.

Stay posted.

Photos from the recent abortive barrel installation

Here are the photos I took to put on a forum for advice on installing my new L119 barrel (see previous post for details). You can clearly see in the pics that the Marui M4 RIS is too short to sit between the delta ring and the foresight cup.

L119A1 Project

It's been a while since I posted anything about thie project, mainly down to the difficulty in getting a barrel. I thought this sticking point had been resolved when I saw that DragonRed and AFS Airsoft both had an L119 barrel for retail, and in decent numbers (as opposed to the joke that Army Code's production runs were).

With a barrel on order at a slightly elevated price, of £62 thanks to the appalling rate of exchange against the dollar, I waited with baited breath.

The barrel arrived last Friday. and appeared to be of excellent quality, arriving as a 3-part set consisting of the main section, an extention that screwed on in front of the foresight, and a sleeve that slid over the end and replaced the washer at the end of the Marui barrel. The barrel had a nice weighty feel, and the parts all fitted together nicely with no play or wobble.

I was away at the weekend, so I had to wait until Sunday night to install it on my almost finished L119. Off came all the old Marui M4 front end with very little effort and on went the main section of the new barrel, fitting perfectly and snugly into the Guarder metal body.

Fitting the Delta ring, foresight and the cup at the front all went well, until I went to install the two halves of the Marui RIS unit, where I encountered two issues.

The section of the barrel at the end that attaches to the receiver is much thicker than the stock Marui barrel and the RIS does not fit around it. No problem there, out with the files and the Dremel to grind a bit away. The second issue is much more of a problem. The Marui RIS is not long enough to be held in place between the delta ring and the cup, there is about a 5mm defecit.

I havee no idea how I'm going to solve this at the moment. I have emailed DragonRed to ask their advice. I have posted on the DragonRed forum for advice. I have also emailed AFSAirsoft to ask them and they claim that they do not supply DragonRed with these items even though someone on the ASCUK forum said he bought a barrel from DragonRed and showed pictures of it complete with the AFSAirsoft label still attached to the packaging.

I now have two possible solutions to my problem.

1. Buy a new RIS unit. Simple enough, but how do I know that the unit I buy will be long enough to fit the barrel?

2. Buy an Element CQB barrel to replace the main section of the DragonRed barrel. Another suitable resolution, but makes me feel like I have wasted a lot of money.

I haven't taken any pics of the gun as it stands, but I feel like I needed to have a moan and to warn other prospective buyers of this barrel.

More to come, undoubtedly.

I could sit and play with it all day...

The LaRue Tactical Weapon Profiler that is. You can custom build yourself a big sexy custom Armalite rifle using all the bits that LaRue build. You could spend all day mucking about with it, like fuzzy felt, but for grown-ups.

I found a link to this on MilitaryPhotos.net, along with this little gif...

The Monday Gunfight

It's crazy, unrealistic, and a bit daft, but it's bloody cool and the pistols have the best muzzle flashes (even if they are quite possibly CG). It's also topical, as it stars the current Batman, Christian Bale, so it might get me some traffic.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Kurt Wimmer's Equilibrium.

Army Code

Massive Defense have put up pictures of the Army Code L119A1 SFW foresight (seen at the bottom of this page that they are due to be producing in the near future (website says July, but as July is nearly over, we can assume that it'll be August or later).

Lots of people are eager to get their hands on this, and Army Code/Massive Defense are obviously aware of the high demand for this largely pointless accessory, and have priced it at £29, which has to be at least £20 too much. As their supply of the now mythical L119A1 barrel has dried up and they seem unable to say when they will again be in stock, I'm not gonna hold my breath. Modifying a standard M4 foresight with milliput (or not being so bloody obsessive about my L119A1 project) is now again on the cards.

Presumably, they have it at this price to pay for their new website.

The Monday Gunfight

It's been parodied, copied and posted all over the internet, but it's still one of the greatest movie gunfights ever. It's the lobby scene from The Matrix.

Just nicked this off MilitaryPhotos.net. A video of some crazy French Puma pilot making a veeeeery low pass. Watch the guy duck as the helo goes over.

New Links

I've just added a few new links to the Airsoft Links page:

AirBana UK Airsoft Map

South Yorkshire Airsoft

Grange Farm Airsoft

Better Battles

Red Troop

I'd also like to take this opportunity to give props to the amazing Tokyo Model Company who have just supplied me with a NSN ACOG replica and a detachable sling mount in lieue of the Army Code barrel that I ordered in February. I've pretty much given up on Army Code, but the L119A1 SFW project will go on.

Midweek Motivation

I seem to be doing everything a day late. Like the Monday Gunfight, I should have posted this yesterday, but who cares. No-one actually reads this crap anyway.
