The Art of the Tactical Carbine

This is the trailer for a three DVD set called 'The Art of the Tactical Carbine' produced by Magpul (the guys behind (surprise, surprise) magpuls and fancy M4 stocks, amongst other things). I've just watched it and I've got wood!

Next Project

I recently joined the Gearsoc.com forum, which incidentally, is a great forum, much friendlier, if not as frequently updated as Wannabe and is based in Sweden. If you're a regular on the UK gear and airsoft boards, there's a few screen-names that you'll recognise there.

All that aside, I saw on this forum that one of their members had modified a PLCE yoke as the load-bearing element for a custom Swedish chest rig. I thought that this was a great idea, and could see no reason why this should not work with other modular chest rigs such as the Tactical Tailor MAV or, in my case, the SOTech Tomcat.

First problem I ran into was sourcing the buckles. The Hellcat has female side-release buckles sewn to the chest rig, with the adjustable male section attached to the shoulder straps. Without wishing to take anything away from the modularity of the rig, and not wanting to ruin it in the event that my experiment with the yoke fails, I don't want to unstitch the buckles so I needed to find some more exactly the same. Fortunately, the buckles have 'Lock Monster' embossed on the back, so I started my Google search with that. Google did not fail me, and I found a couple of distributers that handled 50mm Lock Monster buckles. After sending several emails out (including one to SOTech thamselves), I have so far got two back:

Response 1

Helpful enough, I hear you say.

Response 2

Please tell me if the female protion is adjustable or not?
Also give me your address and I will mail them to you.

Best Regards,

Ann Parrino
Customer Service Manager

How about that ? Ann Natmo has surprised the hell out of me by offering to ship me some buckles without even asking for payment. Is this too good to be true ? We'll have to wait and see.

Stay posted.

Photos from the recent abortive barrel installation

Here are the photos I took to put on a forum for advice on installing my new L119 barrel (see previous post for details). You can clearly see in the pics that the Marui M4 RIS is too short to sit between the delta ring and the foresight cup.

L119A1 Project

It's been a while since I posted anything about thie project, mainly down to the difficulty in getting a barrel. I thought this sticking point had been resolved when I saw that DragonRed and AFS Airsoft both had an L119 barrel for retail, and in decent numbers (as opposed to the joke that Army Code's production runs were).

With a barrel on order at a slightly elevated price, of £62 thanks to the appalling rate of exchange against the dollar, I waited with baited breath.

The barrel arrived last Friday. and appeared to be of excellent quality, arriving as a 3-part set consisting of the main section, an extention that screwed on in front of the foresight, and a sleeve that slid over the end and replaced the washer at the end of the Marui barrel. The barrel had a nice weighty feel, and the parts all fitted together nicely with no play or wobble.

I was away at the weekend, so I had to wait until Sunday night to install it on my almost finished L119. Off came all the old Marui M4 front end with very little effort and on went the main section of the new barrel, fitting perfectly and snugly into the Guarder metal body.

Fitting the Delta ring, foresight and the cup at the front all went well, until I went to install the two halves of the Marui RIS unit, where I encountered two issues.

The section of the barrel at the end that attaches to the receiver is much thicker than the stock Marui barrel and the RIS does not fit around it. No problem there, out with the files and the Dremel to grind a bit away. The second issue is much more of a problem. The Marui RIS is not long enough to be held in place between the delta ring and the cup, there is about a 5mm defecit.

I havee no idea how I'm going to solve this at the moment. I have emailed DragonRed to ask their advice. I have posted on the DragonRed forum for advice. I have also emailed AFSAirsoft to ask them and they claim that they do not supply DragonRed with these items even though someone on the ASCUK forum said he bought a barrel from DragonRed and showed pictures of it complete with the AFSAirsoft label still attached to the packaging.

I now have two possible solutions to my problem.

1. Buy a new RIS unit. Simple enough, but how do I know that the unit I buy will be long enough to fit the barrel?

2. Buy an Element CQB barrel to replace the main section of the DragonRed barrel. Another suitable resolution, but makes me feel like I have wasted a lot of money.

I haven't taken any pics of the gun as it stands, but I feel like I needed to have a moan and to warn other prospective buyers of this barrel.

More to come, undoubtedly.

I could sit and play with it all day...

The LaRue Tactical Weapon Profiler that is. You can custom build yourself a big sexy custom Armalite rifle using all the bits that LaRue build. You could spend all day mucking about with it, like fuzzy felt, but for grown-ups.

I found a link to this on MilitaryPhotos.net, along with this little gif...

The Monday Gunfight

It's crazy, unrealistic, and a bit daft, but it's bloody cool and the pistols have the best muzzle flashes (even if they are quite possibly CG). It's also topical, as it stars the current Batman, Christian Bale, so it might get me some traffic.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Kurt Wimmer's Equilibrium.

Army Code

Massive Defense have put up pictures of the Army Code L119A1 SFW foresight (seen at the bottom of this page that they are due to be producing in the near future (website says July, but as July is nearly over, we can assume that it'll be August or later).

Lots of people are eager to get their hands on this, and Army Code/Massive Defense are obviously aware of the high demand for this largely pointless accessory, and have priced it at £29, which has to be at least £20 too much. As their supply of the now mythical L119A1 barrel has dried up and they seem unable to say when they will again be in stock, I'm not gonna hold my breath. Modifying a standard M4 foresight with milliput (or not being so bloody obsessive about my L119A1 project) is now again on the cards.

Presumably, they have it at this price to pay for their new website.

The Monday Gunfight

It's been parodied, copied and posted all over the internet, but it's still one of the greatest movie gunfights ever. It's the lobby scene from The Matrix.

New Links

I've just added a few new links to the Airsoft Links page:

AirBana UK Airsoft Map

South Yorkshire Airsoft

Grange Farm Airsoft

Better Battles

Red Troop

I'd also like to take this opportunity to give props to the amazing Tokyo Model Company who have just supplied me with a NSN ACOG replica and a detachable sling mount in lieue of the Army Code barrel that I ordered in February. I've pretty much given up on Army Code, but the L119A1 SFW project will go on.

Midweek Motivation

I seem to be doing everything a day late. Like the Monday Gunfight, I should have posted this yesterday, but who cares. No-one actually reads this crap anyway.

The Monday Gunfight (Slightly Later Than Advertised)

I know it's Tuesday, but I haven't yet got into the routine of posting a gunfight every Monday yet. I'll try and do better next month. By way of an apology, here is a great gunfight from a little known, yet excellent film called The Way of the Gun starring Ryan Phillippe, Benicio Del Toro and James Caan. Enjoy.

Full Battle Rattle

I just found a link to this slightyl bizarre movie trailer on MilitaryPhotos.net. It's a movie called Full Battle Rattle about the US Army's Iraq training village in the Mojave Desert. Having watched the trailer, I'm not quite sure what to make of it. It depicts life amidst a full-blown training exercise that also features 1500 Iraqi-Americans role-playing as Iraqi citizens. It all seems a bit light hearted and playful, which I'm not sure is a good way to prepare for war.

Midweek Motivation

It's Wednesday. It's the middle of the week and it's not always easy to keep going through the week. Friday is only two days away and here's the first in a series of motivational posters to keep you going. Yes, I know every Blogger in the world posts these, but they are always entertaining and it's a cheap way of generating search engine hits. Booyah!

Generation Kill

New from HBO, who brought us Band of Brothers (amongst other things), and starting on July 13th, is a new 7-part mini-series about the Marines of First Recon Battalion during the first 30 days of the Iraq war. Generation Kill 'portrays the 'true' story of the young Marines experience at the tip of the spear of the American invasion'.

Generation Kill starts on FX on 13th July (presumably in the US only, initially). Get downloading it, or wait for it to appear in the UK in 6 months or so. In the mean time, enjoy the following trailers and promos and check out the official HBO Generation Kill website...

The first in a series of movie gunfights. Hopfully, I'll remember to do this every monday to try and make an actual series of it. Alternatively, I may forget and it'll be the shortest series in blog history.

Killbuckets Custom Guns & Paint Jobs

If you haven't done so already, check out Killbucket's forum over on Airsoft Pacific. There are some crazy (yet very cool) custom guns and some incredible tips for painting techniques such as water application and a how to on doing a 6-colour desert pattern. Haven't checked out the rest of the forum yet, but this section is well worth a look.

L119A1 SFW Project - Problems So Far

The build got under way last night. Stripping down the doner Marui M4RIS was a doddle, following the instructions on 858 Airsoft and the booklets that originally came with the gun (the instructions from 858 are for the M4A1 and don't tell you how to get the RIS forend off, which the Marui manual does). All in bits and safely lying in the lid of the M4's box, time to get to work putting the bits back onto the metal body.

1. The base plate on the grip won't go back on. The holes in the Guarder large grip don't quite line up with those in the Marui base plate. Coupled with the fact that the screws for the Guarder grip are very short means that this is a right bastard to fit properly. I currently only have one screw holding the base plate on, which doesn't strike me as being a very good idea. It all has to come to bits again due to a reason that will become apparent in a moment, so I'll have to try and find a longer screw that fits, or do something else about the misaligned holes.

2. If you follow the instructions on 858 Airsoft (which is for the standard M4A1), you will find that the gun comes apart very nicely - excellent instructions guys. If any of you have ever read a Haynes car manual, it usually says somewhere that reassembly is just the disassembly instructions backwards. Not so in the case of the Guarder metal body. As it turns out, you have to fit the mechbox back into the top part of the receiver and not the bottom, which is the way it comes apart. That was where I got up to last night, with the mechbox installed into the bottom half of the receiver, and not being able to get the two halves back together. As it was ten o' clock, I thought it best to leave it before I got cross/tired/destructive. A quick look on the internet, and I find a set of instructions on the Guarder website about how to put it together properly. I'll do that tonight. Why they don't ship the receiver with a set of these instructions, I'll never know.

More tomorrow, hopefully with pics of a much more complete, half finished L119A1 SFW assault rifle.

L119A1 Project

I recently found a link on ASCUK to a site called 858 Airsoft with an excellent article (well, I hope it's excellent, it's the one I'll be following when taking my M4 apart) on disassembling the mechbox and receiver of an M4.

The Colt Canada metal receiver and large grip are now sat under my coffee table waiting for me to have time to fit them. The SFW build is almost under way.

Four More Killed in Afghan

The first servicewoman to be killed in Afghanistan has been named as 26 year old Sergeant Sarah Bryant. She and three male colleagues, reported as being from 23 SAS were killed when the Snatch Landrover the soldiers were in was hit by an explosion near Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province, on Tuesday afternoon.

A full report can be found here on the Telegraph website.

Rest in peace.

Fire Support Airsoft ShopThe Colt Canada M4 metal body and the Guarder large grip are now bought and paid for and ready for collection at Fire Support when I'm over in Peterborough on Saturday. Hopefully this is a step forward for the L119A1 project that I've been trying to source bits for for nearly four months. I'll get some pics and a review up sometime next week.

Charlton Heston's Basement

Long time head of the NRA and legendary ape-fighter, Charlton Heston was well known for his love of firearms. Even so, I would never ave expected anything like what is shown in the pictures taken of the 1600 square foot vault under his 1860's manor house. So beatiful. Check out the pictures here.

Colt Canada Body at Fire Support

Must have been the power of the blog. Only a couple of days ago did I blog on these very pages how bloody long I'd had to wait for the bits for my L119A1 build to arrive. Last Saturday (7th) I got a call from Mark at Fire Support to say that the Colt Canada body I'd ordered had arrived. Having dropped Frank an email today, not only has it arrived, but it's also £30 cheaper than I originally thought. Result. That and the Guarder Big Grip will be winging their way to Nottingham in the next few days. Come payday, the rest of the bits will be ordered (having waited for three and a half months for the main bit, I didn't bother with the rest in case it never happened).

On the down side, I emailed Tokyo Model Company today about the Army Code barrel (Army Code still having not answered a single email from me). Unsurprisingly, Army Code have still not manufactured any more, so I'm still waiting for that. The CQB version seems ever more likely.

The next step is actually taking my Marui M4 RIS apart to fit the new bits. Something I've never even thought about doing before. I'm hoping to include that as a photo-blog as the project gets going. Stay tuned.

Tokyo Marui 1911 MEU(SOC)

There is currently a picture and a few rumours going round about a Tokyo Marui MEU pistol. If it's true then there are gonna be a lot of happy airsofters out there, especially if it's anywhere near as good as the last few models of TM pistol such as the SIG226. Western Arms have definitely got some major competition with this one.

From Wikipedia:

The MEU(SOC) pistol, officially designated Pistol, Caliber .45, MEU(SOC), is an air-cooled, magazine-fed, recoil-operated, single-action, semiautomatic handgun chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It is based on the original M1911 design by John Browning, and has been the standard-issue side arm for the Force Recon Element of the United States Marine Corps' Marine Expeditionary Units from 1985 to today.

Centrepoint Update

I've just changed the buttons on my Airsoft Index page so that one of them points to this blog. Same sort of buttons as before, only now it's a pic of an HK416 rather than the front end of an XM177E2.

Not much of an announcement. Sorry.

Demonstration of HK416 Action

Just found on the Military Times website (which in itself is a new discovery for me), a graphic showing how the action of the HK416 works.

Another new site I've come across is Military Spot. Haven't had much of a look at it yet, but will do in the near future.

The ongoing saga of the L119A1 build

It all started back in March (the 20th to be precise) when I placed an order with Tokyo Model Company and made a payment for $120US for an Army Code L119A1 SFW outer barrel. I'm still waiting for the bloody thing, which is not the fault of TMC at all, they have always been incredibly helpful. Army Code on the other hand, the company that manufacture the barrel, are possibly the most evasive company in the world. I must have emailed them ten times to see when the barrel would be back in stock. I've emailed them from different email accounts to two of the three email addresses on their website. I've never heard anything back - Army Code, if you do happen to read this, please let me know if I'm ever likely to see one of these barrels. I think I might make the L119A1 a CQB version now and just go with a 10.5 M4 barrel.

Still waiting for the Colt Canada receiver too (ordered around the same time from Guarder via Fire Support who, like TMC, could not be more helpful. Will this build ever come to fruition ?

Stay tuned.

Motivational Poster

Just found a link to this from The Lair of the Evil DM..

Gearbox Video

First attempt at this email posting business

Here are some links I found the other day.

The first is not a new link, but a link to a redesigned site over at <A HREF=”http://www.uktactical.com/”>UK Tactical</A>. Nice new site, much better than the old one, good work fellas.

Next up is also an old site, but one I rediscover every now and then but always forget to add to my <A HREF=”http;//www.fadedempire.co.uk/centrepoint/airsoft-links.html”>Centrepoint airsoft links page</A>. Centrepoint Airsoft

Welcome to the new Centrepoint Airsoft blog, sister site to my original Centrepoint site. As with all my blogs, it is mainly a point of reference for myself to store interesting and useful links and bits of information. If other people find it interesting and informative then so be it.

I hope to be updating it reasonably regularly, but if I don't, it just means I have better things to do at that point in time but, like all of my other web presences, I'll be back soon.

Enjoy.
